School Goals

School Context:

Pinewood is a school in North Delta that currently enrolls 335 K-7 students in the regular program. At Pinewood, we have a diverse student population, a rich multicultural fabric of families in our community.  Our students bring a diversity of learning needs to our school community; our student population includes students with autism, learning disabilities, hearing loss, and medical or behavioural challenges as well as students with anxiety and complex social-emotional needs.  We have a wide range of family circumstances, from families who are brand new to Canada, to many families who are long-time local residents. Approximately 15% of our students are English Language Learners who receive support at school from our Learning Support Teacher, while many more speak another language in addition to English at home. We currently have 6 students with Indigenous ancestry.
As well, we are hosting a number of international students.

 

Social Emotional Learning

  • Over the last 2 years, Pinewood Elementary has focused on Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
    as a school goal.

    • This year, classes signed up for EASE lessons to support understanding and management of student anxiety across all grades
    • The other SEL school-wide focus has been around achieving your Personal Best. Staff and students have engaged in a year long exploration of how to work hard to achieve your personal best
    • We have continued to use the WITS program across all grades which was first introduced last year. We have also connected back to the 3 hallmarks of being part of the Pinewood school community – Be Kind, Be Safe and Be Fair.

Literacy and Numeracy

    • We planned and hosted our first Literacy Day and Night for our school community to engage students and parents in playing literacy-based games throughout the day and evening. We also organized a Community Reading event and had a DEAR day for students to Drop Everything and Read.
    • Having done the District reading pilot program, we are committed to continuing to use the diagnostic tools (ORF, DIBELS, concepts of print, phonics/phonemic awareness) to identify, support and monitor students who are not proficient in reading.
    • We have also had a year-long focus on building Fact Fluency across all grades this school year as well. Staff put together engaging activities and games to engage students in fact fluency on a daily basis

  • Our school goals are closely aligned with our district’s Vision 2030.
  • We will continue to engage students in literacy-based activities and fact fluency activities
    while continuing to foster students’ social-emotional learning and self-regulation.
